The Marfa weeHouse

The Marfa weeHouse has just two rooms, an all-in-one living space and a bathroom. The living space has a bed placed in the middle of the room with a kitchenette and dining area at one end and a small sitting area at the other end. Custom cabinetry and wood finishes dress up the room. The surprisingly large and luxurious bathroom has both a shower and a bathtub. A separate shed houses the laundry machines and hot water tank. Designed by Geoffrey Warner of Alchemy Architects.

Canopy And Stars

Yesterday I featured a lovely yurt getaway in Devon, UK and now here's the source, Canopy and Stars, a travel website that offers "glamping" (defined as glamour camping).

Unique and out of the way lodging, for unique people, in unique and out of the places.

You can search for and book all sorts of "rustic" accommodations through the site and while most are located in the UK, France, Spain and Portugal are also offered. With more exposure, I'm confidant the site's offerings will expand.

A lot of tents and yurts, but also a fare amount of cottages and other even more offbeat places to stay. My favorite? A converted elephant trainer's wagon (pictured above right) in Alicante, Spain for $114 a night.

Researchers Find Drug Resistant Bacteria's Weakness

Good news comes from Britain today. Apparently researchers have found a way to defeat bacteria's currently evolving resistance to antibiotic treatment.

“It is a very significant breakthrough,” said Professor Changjiang Dong, from the University of East Anglia's Norwich Medical School. “This is really important because drug-resistant bacteria is a global health problem. Many current antibiotics are becoming useless, causing hundreds of thousands of deaths each year. Many bacteria build up an outer defence which is important for their survival and drug resistance. We have found a way to stop that happening,"

The research centers around a bacteria's ability to build an impenetrable wall to keep out antibiotics and they believe that within a few years they will be able to develop a means to switch of this wall-building mechanism, making the bacteria vulnerable once again.

ELF - The Solar Powered Tricyle

I found this on Lloyd's Blog.

The future of urban transportation will change. A recent drive in NYC from the Holland Tunnel to 67th and back convinced me of that.

Enter the ELF, a solar and foot powered vehicle perfectly adapted to city transit. I expect that vehicles like this will become the norm in our major coastal cities over the next fifty years or so.

At a base price of $6k each, expect to see these running around soon with two passenger and delivery sized variations undoubtedly to follow.

BTW, made in the USA. Complete lowdown in the graphic below.

Recording With Sean And Charlotte

I have been quite enamored of the work of these two geniuses. I thought their first album, "Acoustic Sessions", was the best album of the year in 2010. Now comes their psychedelic masterpiece "Midnight Sun", which I've included the entire video of the live show my daughter and I saw in New Jersey in May.

Then I read an interview with them in Electronic Musician magazine and realized how brilliant the really are. Their recording techniques go far beyond today's current practices and point back to an era where experimentation often delivered sonic ecstasy.

Another thing stood out: Sean had found a cache of his dad's gear on Craig's List and snatched it up. Guitars, effects and other stuff all infused with the mojo of arguably, the Beatles' most creative member.

Have a look and listen and you'll see what I'm talking about. There's also an extended interview HERE.

Biodegradable Fibers As Strong As Steel Made From Wood Cellulose

Scientists at Stockholm's KTH Royal Institute of Technology have apparently found a way to use cellulose to make a material stronger than steel. The discovery makes it possible to replace substance such as fiberglass, plastic, and metal with a fibrous material that would biodegrade over time.

The real kicker - this stuff only requires water, wood cellulose and common table salt to create it.

NASA's Starship

Some really fancy "artist concept" renderings of Dr. Harold White's theoretical Alcubierre warp drive starship have shown up on the web recently. For those of you who are unaware, NASA has been researching this idea for a while now and there are currently experiments underway to create a tiny "warp bubble" as proof of concept.

Anyway, here is one of the renderings. Beautiful, huh? More images HERE.

Play-I - Toy Robots Teach Children To Program

I'm always looking for interesting toys that promote children's education. Here's nifty new one that incorporates logic, experimentation, programming and play. The two toys, Bo and Yana, are designed to teach different lessons, but can also work together and teach programming skills using music, annimation and stories. They are available for pre-order HERE.

Here's a video from the developers.

A Cow Cologne That Can Prevent Malaria

Moo
Pretty much everyone hates mosquitoes. The itching bites are bad enough, but the diseases that they carry infect hundreds of millions and kill millions of people every year.

A California company, ISCA Technologies, may have a solution. They are developing a human scented "cologne" for cows. The idea is to draw the mosquitoes to cows instead of people. This would be sprayed on the cows and would make them smell like humans for up to a couple of months. If also treated with insecticide, the mosquito dies.

If you want to read more here's a link to the Smithsonian.com article.

The Last Living Navajo Code Talker Has Died

Chester Nez was one of 29 of the original Code Talkers recruited by the Marine Corp during the Second World War to develop an unbreakable code using Navajo. The Corp had decided that the characteristics of the Navajo language were almost impossible for a non-Navajo to learn.

As a child he was forced to attend a boarding school that punished him for speaking his native language. Perhaps war in the Pacific would have gone differently had Nez's teachers been successful in obliterating his language.

He died peacefully at his home Wednesday. He was 93.

Trash Amps

The Trash Amps website proclaims "ridiculously loud portable speakers" and "amazing sound from simple earth-friendly materials". What I see is another group of young people producing a great sounding, tiny guitar amp (also useful for your MP3 player) from the bare minimum of parts.

They are currently offering two kits for you maker types (mason jar amp and wooden box amp) and a finished mason jar amp.
